چکیده

We present an analysis of wide-field infrared extinction maps of a region in Perseus just north of the Taurus-Auriga dark cloud complex. From this analysis we have identified a massive, nearby, but previously unrecognized, giant molecular cloud (GMC). Both a uniform foreground star density and measurements of the cloud’s velocity field from CO observations indicate that this cloud is likely a coherent structure at a single distance. From comparison of foreground star counts with Galactic models we derive a distance of 450 ± 23 parsecs to the cloud. At this distance the cloud extends over roughly 80 pc and has a mass of ≈ 10 M⊙, rivaling the Orion (A) Molecular Cloud as the largest and most massive GMC in the solar neighborhood. Although surprisingly similar in mass and size to the more famous Orion Molecular Cloud (OMC) the newly recognized cloud displays significantly less star formation activity with more than an order of magnitude fewer Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) than found in the OMC, suggesting that both the level of star formation and perhaps the star formation rate in this cloud are an order of magnitude or more lower than in the OMC. Analysis of extinction maps of both clouds shows that the new cloud contains only 10% the amount of high extinction (AK > 1.0 mag) material as is found in the OMC. This, in turn, suggests that the level of star formation activity and perhaps the star formation rate in these two clouds may be directly proportional to the total amount of high extinction material and presumably high density gas within them and that there might be a density threshold for star formation on the order of n(H2) ≈ a few × 10 4 cm. Bovine tuberculosis (TBB) is a zoonotic disease distributed worldwide and is of great importance for public health and the livestock industry. Several experimental vaccines against this disease have been evaluated in recent years, yielding varying results. An example is the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, which has been used extensively in humans and tested in cattle showing mixed resul...

Low Molecular Weight Heparin Overdose: A 10 Year Case Series

Background: Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) is used for the treatment and prevention of coagulative disorders. Few patients receiving therapeutic doses of LMWH develop major hemorrhage. Currently there are few reports in the literature on acute overdose on adults.  In this study, clinical profile, treatment and outcome of 21 patients who acutely overdosed enoxaparin are described. Method...

Evidence for a Molecular Cloud Origin for Gamma-Ray Bursts: Implications for the Nature of Star Formation in the Universe

It appears that the majority of rapidly-, well-localized gamma-ray bursts with undetected, or dark, optical afterglows, or ‘dark bursts’ for short, occur in clouds of size R ∼> 10L 1/2 49 pc and mass M ∼> 3× 10 L49 M⊙, where L is the isotropic-equivalent peak luminosity of the optical flash. We show that clouds of this size and mass cannot be modeled as a gas that is bound by pressure equilibri...

Introduction: Genetics, cellular and molecular medicines are cutting-edge sciences and technologies that play an important role in improving human health and quality of life. In addition, medical and biological sciences have clearly shown that the onset of diseases differs from person to person due to their different genetic profiles and variations in molecular basis. Therefore, it is feasible ...
